More About Hyundai Hope on Wheels

What is Hope On Wheels?

Hyundai Hope On Wheels® is the united effort of Hyundai Motor America and its more than 800 dealers across the U.S. to raise awareness about childhood cancer and to celebrate the lives of children battling the disease. For 2012, Hyundai Hope On Wheels plans to surpass $57 million in total donations to childhood cancer research since the program began in 1998. Hyundai Hope On Wheels is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Why did Hyundai and its dealers decide to fund pediatric cancer research?

Hyundai and its dealers joined the fight against pediatric cancer because it is the leading disease-related cause of death among children in the U.S. Every 36 minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer in the U.S., the equivalent of an entire classroom, which adds up to almost 15,000 new cases of childhood cancer each year. Yet, only 3 percent of federal cancer funds are allocated to pediatric cancers. Hyundai and its dealers believe this is a fight we can and must win.

When was Hope On Wheels founded?

The program began in 1998 when a group of New England-area Hyundai dealers started an initiative to raise money for the Jimmy Fund at Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. 14 years later, their work has grown into Hope On Wheels, a national nonprofit organization supported by Hyundai Motor America and its more than 800 U.S. Hyundai dealers and customers. Hope On Wheels was officially founded, and received its 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization certification in 2007.

How long has Hope On Wheels been donating money to fight pediatric cancer? How much money has Hope On Heels donated?

This year marks Hope On Wheels’ 14th year supporting the fight against pediatric cancer. In 2012, Hope On Wheels plans to donate $13.4 million through its Hyundai Scholar Grant and Hyundai Hope Grant programs to children’s hospitals nationwide, bringing its total donations to the cause to $57 million since its inception in 1998. In addition to the annual Scholar Grant and Hope Grant programs, Hope On Wheels is launching its 5K Run/Walk Series in which Hope On Wheels will travel to three cities, including Irvine, CA, Chicago, IL and Miami, FL. All funds raised will be donated to a local hospital.
